April 2010
The NUWC's office will be closed for the summer starting April 1st.
Apr. 1 - (5-7PM FREE in the Monastery basement)GESJ and FAVA are joining forces to bring you social networking in 3-D!That's right, combat the post-Avatar / Alice in Wonderland depression by attending a 3-D event featuring real people making surreal conversation. Not only will we facilitate conversation between real 3-D humans, we will also work co-operatively to silkscreen t-shirts. Am I blowing your mind? Bring yourself, your friends, and your pre-loved or "new" t-shirts from a local thrift shop to the Monastery on April Fool's Day. Then, and only then, you can silkscreen the Tiger or Typewriter GESJ designs onto your shirts - and we are working hard to bring you brand new FAVA and GESJ designs. Spring is here and we are turning over a forest's worth of new leaves. We also know how you appreciate the great value of peer-to-peer networks and that is why we will be announcing the first ever recipient of an official GESJ / FAVA crush. Everyone knows that GESJ has a crush on FAVA, and that we non-monogamously "date" Religion and Cultures, the Near North Mobile Media Lab and History (the Department, not the past). That said, FAVA and GESJ have developed a shared crush on yet another one of our peers and, frankly, we're not shy. We'll be publicly announcing who and why at the end-of-term party. Oh yeah, pizza, did I mention there will be pizza?
Apr. 6 - Official last day of classes!
Apr. 9 - The NUWC will be hosting its End-of-Year Volounteer Appreciation Games Night! H102 and H131 are booked. Bring your board games and tupperware to bring some food back home. 5PM start, 6PM Bbq supper (Burgers (including Boca burgers), hotdogs, coleslaw, potato salad, watermelon, chocolate brownies and pop), 6:30 speeches and the rest of the night - GAMES! Plus, there will be a wii and karaoke setup!

Providing these life-changing opportunities has a great impact not only on the sponsored individuals but on the whole campus community. WUSC members believe that “Education Changes the World”! Feb. 9th - The World University Service of Canada(WUSC) Nipissing Local Committee and the Nipissing University Student Union(NUSU) invite you to Yves Kalala's Talk on the Student Refugee Program (SRP). Nipissing University introduced the SRP in 2004 and Vicky Samuel was the first sponsored student. Vicky is now a nurse at the North Bay and District Hospital after graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (http://www.nugget.ca/ArticleDisplay.aspx?e=2126285). Whether due to war or political repression, students are often persecuted, imprisoned or forced into exile, joining the ranks of the world's estimated 16 million refugees and asylum seekers. They have virtually no opportunity for post-secondary education. But since 1978, WUSC's Student Refugee Program (SRP) has enabled more than 1000 of these capable young men and women to resettle in Canada as permanent residents and pursue their education in an environment free of violence and fear. About the Speaker: Yves Kalala, our second SRP student would like to thank Nipissing University and the North Bay community as his sponsorship term is coming to an end. He is currently a third-year student in the Social Development and Social Welfare program. Yves was not only a refugee in Malawi, but a translator for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). He also worked with the Education Country Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) in Malawi as a Camp Assistant. Yves speaks four different languages, holds a certificate of recognition from The Goi Peace Foundation and The World Peace Prayer Society for his participation in the International Essay Contest for Young People. He was one of the founding members of the UNESCO ASPnet Club at Mangochi Secondary School. He is currently writing a book on his life experiences in the Congo and Malawi. His life goal is to educate people about the stories of refugees whose voices have rarely been given an opportunity to be heard. + Entertainment: African Dances by the African Canadian Cultural Club (ACCC). Maggie is a survivor of horrendous physical abuse whose recovery took a long time. She shares her story in hope that her book will help other 'fireflies' heal and that they wil find just surviving isn't alwasy enough. Maggie is the founder and executive director of Wynterblue Publishing Canada Inc., a not-for-profit publishing house based in North Bay, Ontario. It is a fulfillment of her dream to create a means of assisting other writers in overcoming long odds. Her new-found power over her own life enabled and motivated her to reach out to others, evidence of her arrival at really living again. Profit from sales of the book will make Christmas brighter for children whose lives have been disrupted by abuse and by escape from it.
